Rosberg wins prestigious Laureus award



After a career-setting season in 2016, new Formula One world champion Nico Rosberg won another trophy award on Tuesday evening at the prestigious Laureus World Sports Awards in Monaco.

Rosberg was victorious in the category of breakthrough of the year, German parade competition of world record athletes Almaz Ayana and Wayde van Niekerk and three teams that played heroically in 2016: English Premier League Champions Leicester City, Finalists Iceland and the gold medal winners at Fiji Olympic Rugby.

Rosberg is the fifth F1 driver to win the award, following Daniel Ricciardo (2015), Jenson Button (2010), Lewis Hamilton (2010), Lewis Hamilton (Lewis Hamilton in 2016 after two previous defeats) 2008) and Juan Pablo Montoya (2002).

"[It's] incredibly special to me," said Rosberg, who received his two-time F1 champion Emerson Fittipaldi in a video message posted on Twitter. "It's the Oscar of the sport, that's the biggest thing you can win in sports."

For the third consecutive year, the Rosberg Mercedes team was nominated for the World Team of the Year, but the Silver Arrows lost to the Chicago Baseball Cubs, who won their first World Series title for 108 Years in 2016.

Other winners include Olympic champion Usain Bolt and gymnast Gold Medalist, Simone Biles, respectively named Sporting and Sporting of the Year, and swimmer Michael Phelps who won the Comeback Award Of the Year.
